Ventura County, located along California’s southern coast, is home to a unified Superior Court system that handles the full spectrum of legal matters — from felony criminal cases and civil disputes to family law proceedings, probate estates, and juvenile dependency matters. Whether you’re conducting due diligence on a business partner, researching your own legal history, or navigating a family legal matter, understanding how Ventura County’s court system stores, organizes, and releases records is the essential first step.

Court records in Ventura County are maintained by the Superior Court of California, County of Ventura, which operates three courthouse locations. The Records Department oversees physical case files and responds to record requests, while several online tools allow members of the public to locate case information without visiting a courthouse in person.

Locating Court Records in Ventura County:

California residents and out-of-state requesters have multiple paths to find court case information in Ventura County. The Ventura Superior Court’s official website offers online case inquiry tools, and public access terminals are available inside each courthouse for on-site review. For broader statewide searches, CaliforniaCourts.us provides a starting point for locating publicly available court case information across California’s unified court system. The most current and reliable records, however, remain accessible through the Ventura Superior Court’s own clerk offices and electronic portals described throughout this guide.

How to Look Up a Court Case in Ventura County?

The Ventura Superior Court provides several ways to search for case information, depending on the case type and how much detail you already have.

Online Case Inquiry

The court’s Case Inquiry page is the primary starting point for most searches. The system is divided by case category:

  • Civil, Probate, and Small Claims cases are searchable through the Ventura Superior Court Public Access Portal, which requires free account registration. Cases entered into the Family Law database from September 1, 1991 onward are generally available, along with many active cases predating that entry point.
  • Criminal and Traffic cases can be looked up through the Case Information Search page. Municipal Court cases are available from January 1, 1989 forward. Note that as of June 21, 2021, searches may no longer be conducted using a date of birth or driver’s license number, in compliance with All of Us or None - Riverside Chapter v. Hamrick (2021) 64 Cal. App 5th 751.
  • Family Law minute orders and minute orders for Probate Guardianships and Conservatorships are no longer available online per mandate of the Administrative Office of the Courts.

In-Person Records Lookup

The Records Department at the Hall of Justice (Room 218) handles Civil, Family Law, Small Claims, Criminal, and Traffic cases. The Juvenile Courthouse in Oxnard (Room 122) handles Juvenile, Probate, Guardianship, and Adoption records. Both offices are open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding court holidays.

  • A current, government-issued photo ID is required for in-person file review.
  • Case files may not be removed from the courthouse, and documents may not be removed from case files.
  • Photography of court documents is not permitted.
  • Older files stored off-site must be retrieved in advance; you will be notified when the file is ready.

Are Court Records Public in Ventura County?

The general rule in California is that court records are open to the public. Access is governed primarily by the California Public Records Act (CPRA), codified at Government Code § 6250 et seq., which establishes a strong presumption in favor of disclosure. The California Constitution additionally recognizes individuals’ rights to privacy, and courts must balance these competing interests when processing records requests.

Records That Are Publicly Accessible

Most civil case filings, criminal case dockets, small claims judgments, and probate inventories fall within the public domain and can be reviewed by any member of the public upon request.

Records That Are Restricted or Confidential

Certain categories of records are sealed from public view by statute or court order. These include:

  • Juvenile delinquency and dependency records (accessible only to parties, court officers, specific agencies, or by order of the Presiding Judge of the Juvenile Court)
  • Adoption records
  • Records containing Social Security numbers, financial account information, and other sensitive personal identifiers
  • Medical and psychological records
  • Sealed records pursuant to court order
  • Victim identifying information in certain violent or sensitive crimes
  • Records protected by attorney-client privilege
  • Records whose disclosure would endanger the safety of a witness or compromise an ongoing investigation

California Rules of Court, Rule 10.500 governs public access to administrative records of trial courts and sets the framework within which the Ventura Superior Court’s Public Information Officer operates. Requesters seeking administrative court records — rather than case records — may direct inquiries under this rule.

Ventura County Criminal Court Records

The Ventura Superior Court’s Hall of Justice in Ventura handles all felony and misdemeanor criminal cases. The Records Department at Room 218 maintains these files, and online criminal case lookups are available through the court’s Criminal or Traffic Case Inquiry portal. Searches can be conducted by first and last name or case number. Traffic cases require a citation number. Only current infractions and misdemeanors are searchable online; felony case availability varies based on when the case was entered into the system (Superior Court felony entries began in 1995).

Ventura County Sheriff’s Office — Criminal Records Bureau

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Criminal Records Bureau serves as the central repository for local criminal records and maintains arrest records for incidents within the Sheriff’s jurisdiction. The bureau operates Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at two locations:

VCSO Records Bureau
Address: 800 S. Victoria Ave., Ventura, CA 93009

Thousand Oaks Police Department
Address: 2101 E. Olsen Rd., Thousand Oaks, CA 91360

Records requests to the Sheriff’s Office may be submitted in three ways:

  1. Electronically: Download the Record Request Form, complete it, and email it to vcso.publicrecordsrequests@ventura.org.
  2. By mail: Mail the completed form with a copy of your government-issued photo ID and a money order (personal checks are not accepted).
  3. In person: Visit either location during business hours.

Requests without a subpoena, court order, or specific statutory authority are treated as CPRA requests under Government Code § 7923.600. The Sheriff’s Office may take up to 10 calendar days to respond (Cal. Gov. Code § 7922.535).

Sheriff’s Office Records Fees

ServiceFee
Booking Photos (authorized persons only)$20.00
Booking Sheets$20.00
Calls for Service$20.00
Report Copies$20.00

Records will not be released when disclosure would endanger a witness, compromise an active investigation, or is prohibited by state or federal law, including child and elder abuse reports.

Ventura County Civil Court Records

All civil matters in Ventura County — including unlimited and limited civil cases, small claims disputes, and civil harassment matters — are heard by the Superior Court and maintained by the Records Department at the Hall of Justice. The court divides civil cases into those filed in Ventura and those handled at the East County Courthouse in Simi Valley, though the central Records Department serves both.

Online Civil Case Search

Civil, Probate, and Small Claims case information is searchable through the Ventura Superior Court Public Access Portal, powered by Journal Technologies. Users must create a free account. The system allows searches by name, case number, and other identifiers.

Filing Civil Cases

Civil case filing fees are governed by the Statewide Civil Fee Schedule, which was updated effective January 1, 2026. The court also maintains a local forms library and state Judicial Council forms for self-represented litigants. The Civil Self-Help Center assists those without attorneys in selecting and completing the appropriate forms.

Small Claims

Small claims cases are also managed through the Hall of Justice and are included in the civil case online portal. Small claims matters are limited to disputes within California’s statutory monetary thresholds and do not require an attorney.

Ventura County Family Court Records

Family Law matters in Ventura County are handled exclusively by the Superior Court’s Hall of Justice in Ventura, with the Family Law Clerk’s Office located in Room 210. The clerk’s office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding court holidays.

The Family Law division presides over dissolution/divorce, legal separation, nullity of marriage, domestic partnership matters, child custody and visitation, child support, spousal support, domestic violence restraining orders, elder abuse restraining orders, paternity actions, guardianship, and name change petitions.

Filing Family Law Documents

Documents may be filed in person at Room 210, by mail, through the drop box outside the courthouse, or electronically through the court’s eDelivery system. Mail filings go to:

Ventura Superior Court
Attn: Family Law Clerk’s Office
P.O. Box 6489
Ventura, CA 93006

Emergency restraining order filings may be submitted electronically to EmergencyRestrainingOrdersFamilyandCivil@ventura.courts.ca.gov.

Domestic violence petition filing carries no filing fee. All other petitions reference the court’s current fee and bail schedule. Fee waiver applications are available at no cost for those who cannot afford filing fees.

Accessing Family Law Records

Because Family Law records contain sensitive personal information, access restrictions apply. The online case portal no longer provides minute orders for Family Law cases per state mandate. Records not available online must be accessed through the Records Department at Room 218 during regular business hours. In-person file review requires a photo ID, and files may not leave the courthouse.

Dissolution of Marriage Records

A certified copy of a Final Judgment of Dissolution of Marriage costs a flat $15.00, with no additional per-page charge. Requests can be submitted in person, by mail, or by email to RecordsCorrespondence@ventura.courts.ca.gov.

Marriage Certificates and Vital Records

Marriage licenses, certified marriage certificates, and divorce-related vital records are maintained by the Ventura County Clerk-Recorder. Certified copies of marriage certificates cost $17.00 per copy, with an additional $17.00 for each additional copy.

Child Custody Recommending Counseling

When custody or visitation disputes arise, the court refers parties to Family Court Services (FCS) for Child Custody Recommending Counseling (CCRC), as mandated under Family Code §§ 3160, 3170, and 3183. FCS is located at Room 307 of the Hall of Justice, 800 South Victoria Avenue, Ventura, CA 93009. Public phone hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., reachable at (805) 289-8735. Children aged six and older are required to attend CCRC sessions.

Ventura County Probate Court Records

Probate matters in Ventura County are filed with and maintained by the Superior Court’s Juvenile Justice Center in Oxnard. Searching Probate Records Online

Non-confidential probate case information can be searched through the Civil, Probate, and Small Claims Public Access Portal. However, minute orders for Probate Guardianships and Conservatorships are no longer available online. For adoptions and other sealed probate matters, access requires either party status or a court order. Contact the Juvenile and Probate Courthouse directly at (805) 289-8820 for adoption, juvenile, and probate record inquiries.

What Probate Records Contain

Probate case files typically include the decedent’s will (if one exists), petitions for letters testamentary or letters of administration, inventories and appraisals of the estate, accountings, orders for distribution, and any conservatorship or guardianship orders. These documents establish the legal chain of authority for managing and distributing a deceased person’s estate.

Tentative Rulings and Probate Notes

The Ventura Superior Court publishes tentative rulings and probate notes on its official website. These can be accessed directly through the court’s homepage at ventura.courts.ca.gov, providing advance notice of how the court is likely to rule on pending matters before a scheduled hearing.
