Santa Barbara County stretches along California’s Central Coast, with its county seat in the city of Santa Barbara and additional population centers in Santa Maria, Lompoc, and the Santa Ynez Valley. The county is served by a single trial court — the Superior Court of California, County of Santa Barbara — which operates through multiple divisions spread across the region. Unlike states with separate district, circuit, or municipal courts, California consolidates all trial-level matters into the Superior Court, which handles criminal prosecutions, civil disputes, family law, probate, juvenile proceedings, small claims, and traffic cases. The Superior Court Clerk maintains the official case files, while the Santa Barbara County Clerk-Recorder is the custodian of vital records, real property documents, and other recorded instruments.
Individuals looking for court case data in California can begin with the official resources provided by clerk offices, public access terminals at courthouses, and the court’s online search tools. The California judiciary, accessible through CaliforniaCourts.us, maintains statewide court directories, forms libraries, and rules of court that may help users identify the correct venue and understand what records are publicly available. For Santa Barbara County specifically, the Superior Court operates its own case records search portal that provides online access to civil, probate, and certain other case indexes, though criminal index searches are not currently available online and require an in-person visit.
How to Look Up a Court Case in Santa Barbara County?
Santa Barbara County Superior Court provides several pathways for locating case information, depending on the case type and whether you need docket data or actual document copies.
Online Case Search
The court’s Case Information portal allows free searches of civil, probate, family law, and small claims indexes. Users can search by case number or party name using the Smart Search or Search Hearing functions. Note that under California Rules of Court, rule 2.503, certain case categories — including probate, family law, civil harassment, and workplace violence — are restricted from remote electronic display. For those case types, documents may only be viewed on public access terminals at the courthouse.
An online criminal index is not available. Users seeking criminal case information must visit the Records window in person during business hours.
In-Person Access
Public access computer terminals are available in the lobbies of the Figueroa Division (South County), the Miller Division (North County), and the Lompoc Division. Walk-in visitors can view case files and use these terminals at no charge during regular hours.
Requesting Copies of Court Records
To obtain copies of documents, complete the court’s Copy Request Form and submit it in person, by mail, or by email. The court also provides instructions for completing the form. Allow up to 14 business days for processing; off-site or in-courtroom files may take longer.

Are Court Records Public in Santa Barbara County?
Court records in Santa Barbara County are presumed open to public inspection under the California Public Records Act (Government Code §§ 7920.000–7931.000), which requires state and local agencies to make records available upon request during regular business hours. The California Rules of Court further establish that court records are public unless they are made confidential by statute or sealed by judicial order.
The following categories of records are restricted from general public access under Title 2 of the California Rules of Court and various state statutes:

Probate matters are heard in both the South County (Anacapa Division) and North County (Cook/Miller Divisions) locations.
Searching Probate Records

However, under rule 2.503, probate documents are restricted from remote electronic display. To view the actual filed documents, visit a courthouse with public access terminals or submit a Copy Request Form for copies.
Probate Examiners and Notes
The court employs Probate Examiners who review all documents for legal sufficiency before hearings. Probate notes are posted approximately one week before scheduled hearings on the court’s Tentative Rulings page. Parties are responsible for checking the website regularly. For South County cases only, the Probate Examiner can be reached at ProbateExaminer@sbcourts.org for clarification about a specific posted probate note.
Probate Facilitator (North County)
Self-represented litigants involved in conservatorship of the person or guardianship of the person cases in northern Santa Barbara County can access a free Probate Facilitator funded through the Sargent Shriver Civil Counsel Act grant program. The Probate Facilitator assists with petitions, objections, terminations, annual status reports, and related filings but does not represent parties in court. Contact the facilitator at (805) 614-6622 or (805) 614-6413 (Spanish), located at 312 E. Cook Street, Building E, 2nd floor, Santa Maria.
Key Probate Forms
Probate filings require multiple Judicial Council forms, which are updated frequently. Current forms are available from the court’s local forms page and from the Judicial Council website. Commonly used local probate forms include the Transfer of Small Estates Without Probate (SC-6020) and the Determination of Conservatee’s Appropriate Level of Care (GC-355). Filing incomplete or incorrect forms may cause delays and require amendments.
Requesting Probate Records
Standard copy fees and procedures apply. Submit the Copy Request Form to the Records Division serving the location where the probate case was filed. The $40.00 certification fee plus $0.50 per page applies for certified copies of probate documents. In-person viewing on public terminals is free during business hours. Conservatorship records involving protected health information may carry additional confidentiality protections limiting who can access the file.
