Mendocino County covers a large rural stretch of northern California's coast and interior, with its county seat in Ukiah. The Superior Court of California, County of Mendocino, is the sole trial court in the county and handles the full range of case types — criminal, civil, family law, probate, juvenile, small claims, and traffic. All case files are now maintained electronically, and the court no longer keeps paper records.

If you're looking for court records in California, you can search through the clerks' offices directly, use public access kiosks at the courthouse, or go through the court's online tools. CaliforniaCourts.us can also help you locate publicly available case data across the state. The Mendocino County Superior Court website gives you direct access to its case information portal, local forms, fee schedules, and division contact details.

How to Look Up a Court Case in Mendocino County?

Mendocino County court cases can be searched online, at courthouse kiosks, or through written requests to the clerk's office. Because all records are electronic, the court offers several access points depending on the case type and your relationship to it.

Online case search re:SearchCA:

The court's main electronic search tool is re:SearchCA, accessible through the court's Case Information portal. Through re:SearchCA, you can view case information, party details, hearing schedules, case events, and some filed documents. Parties and attorneys of record can view their own cases and documents remotely. All publicly available civil cases can also be viewed remotely by non-parties.

Under California Rules of Court, rule 2.503, members of the public who are not parties or attorneys may not remotely view certain case types. Restricted categories include criminal, family law, juvenile, guardianship, conservatorship, mental health, and restraining order cases. To view those records, non-parties must visit the courthouse kiosks in person.

For older cases not yet available on re:SearchCA, the court maintains a separate public case index of imaged records.

In-person access — courthouse kiosks:

Public access kiosks are available at both the Ukiah and Fort Bragg courthouses, located adjacent to the clerks' offices. Posted instructions at each kiosk walk you through the search process. These terminals let you look up non-confidential criminal, family law, restraining order, conservatorship, and guardianship records that cannot be viewed remotely.

Are Court Records Public in Mendocino County?

Mendocino County court records are generally presumed public under the California Public Records Act and the California Rules of Court. Any person may inspect or obtain copies of publicly available records maintained by the court.

Civil case documents are broadly available for remote viewing through re:SearchCA. That said, certain case categories are restricted to in-courthouse viewing only for non-parties, and some records are closed to the public entirely.

Records not accessible to the public include:

  • Juvenile court proceedings
  • Sealed or expunged cases
  • Grand jury proceedings
  • Information protected by state or federal privacy laws
  • Confidential financial information filed under seal
  • Medical and mental health records
  • Domestic violence case details protected by statute
  • Victim and witness identifying information
  • Cases made confidential by court order or a change in law

Remote viewing restrictions under rule 2.503:

Non-parties cannot remotely view criminal cases, family law cases, juvenile matters, guardianship and conservatorship proceedings, mental health cases, or any type of restraining order. These records must be accessed at the courthouse kiosks during business hours. Parties to a case and their attorneys of record retain full remote access to their own cases.

Any time a publicly available case is made confidential by court order or by a change in law, it is automatically removed from public view on re:SearchCA.

For questions about access or ADA accommodations for courthouse visits, contact the Court Administration office at (707) 468-2056 or by email at court.administration@mendocino.courts.ca.gov.
