Madera County is located in California’s San Joaquin Valley, with the city of Madera serving as the county seat. The Madera County Superior Court is the sole trial court in the county, handling all criminal, civil, family, probate, juvenile, and traffic matters. Court records generated through these proceedings—including complaints, motions, orders, judgments, exhibits, and minute entries—are maintained by the clerk of the Superior Court and, for certain vital and property records, by the Madera County Clerk-Recorder.
Residents and members of the public seeking court records in California can begin by consulting official court resources, the clerk’s office at the courthouse, and online case-search tools provided by the judicial branch. The statewide portal at CaliforniaCourts.us may also help users locate publicly available court case information and connect with the correct local court. Madera County’s own electronic case portal, described below, offers a self-service option for searching many case types without visiting the courthouse in person.

Are Court Records Public in Madera County?
Court records in California are presumed open to the public. Two principal bodies of law govern access: the California Public Records Act (Government Code §§ 7920–7931) and the California Rules of Court, Rule 2.502 and related rules in Title 2, which address public access to judicial administrative records and electronic court records.
Any person may inspect or obtain copies of court records that are not sealed, confidential, or otherwise restricted by statute or court order. The clerk’s office may not require a requester to state a reason for the request.
Categories of restricted or confidential records include:
- Juvenile dependency and delinquency case files
- Sealed adoption records
- Mental-health conservatorship proceedings
- Identities of sexual-assault victims
- Details contained in certain protective orders
- Trade-secret material filed under seal
- Sealed settlement agreements
- Certain family-law financial declarations when sealed by order
- Records subject to a court sealing order under California Rules of Court, Rule 2.550
When a document contains both public and confidential information, the court may redact the confidential portions and release the remainder. Parties filing documents are responsible for omitting or redacting Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, and other protected identifiers under Rule 1.201 of the California Rules of Court. Members of the public who believe they need access to a sealed or confidential record must file a motion with the court demonstrating good cause.
